ആരാധനാ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യവും കോലഞ്ചേരി പ്രശ്നവും

കോലഞ്ചേരി  പള്ളി സംബന്ധമായി വ്യവഹാരങ്ങളും സന്ധി ആലോചനകളും അനേക വര്ഷങ്ങളായി നടക്കുന്നെങ്കിലും പ്രശ്നം പരിഹരിക്കപ്പെടുമെന്ന് ആശിക്കാൻ പോലും  പറ്റാത്ത നിലയാണ് ഇപ്പോൾ ഉള്ളത് .ഈ ഘട്ടത്തിൽ ഉയര്ന്നു കേള്ക്കുന്ന ഒരു വാദ .മാണ് ആരാധന സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം   നിഷേധിക്ക പ്പെടുന്നു എന്നത് .യകൊഅയ സഭ എന്ന് സ്വയം വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന പുതന്കുരിശി ലെ സോസൈ റ്റി  ആണ് ഈ വാദം ഉന്നയിക്കുന്നത്

ഏ തു അര്തതിലാണ് അവരുടെ ആരാധനാ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം നിഷേ ധിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്‌ എ ന്നു വ്യക്തമല്ല .ഇന്ത്യ മഹാരാജ്യത്ത്  ഏതു  പൗരനും ആ വ്യക്തിയുടെ  വിശ്വാസത്തിനു അനുസരിച്ചുള്ള ആരാധന നടത്തുവാനുള്ള അവകാശമുണ്ട്‌. ആ വ്യക്തിയുടെയോ സമാന വിസ്വാസമുല്ലവരുദെയൊ സ്ഥലത്ത് ആരാധന നടത്തുവാനുള്ള സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യമാണ് അത്.അത് ലംഘിക്കപ്പെട്ടാൽ നിയമ നടപടികളിലൂടെ പരിഹാരം തേടുവാനുള്ള നീതി ന്യായ വ്യവസ്ഥിതിയും  ഈ രാജ്യത്തുണ്ട്

കോലഞ്ചേരി വലിയ പള്ളിയിൽ  തങ്ങൾക്കു ആരാധിക്കാൻ സാധിക്കുന്നില്ല  എന്നതാണ് പുത്തൻ  കുരിശു സൊസൈറ്റി യുടെ വാദം.പള്ളിക്കേസുകൾ കേള്ക്കുവാനുള്ള പ്രത്യേക ജില്ലാ കോടതി ,ഹൈകോടതി  സിംഗിൾ ബെഞ്ച്‌, ഡിവിഷൻ ബെഞ്ച്‌ എന്നിവയെല്ലാം ഈ പള്ളി മലങ്കര സഭയുടെ  ആരധനാലയമാനെണ്ണ്‍  എന്ന് കണ്ടെത്തുകയും  അതനുസരിച്ച് വിധി പ്രസത വിക്കയും  ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട് .ആയതിനാൽ നിയമപരമായും  വസ്തുതാപരമായും  ആ ദേവാലയം മലങ്കര ഓർത്തഡോൿസ്‌ സഭയുടെതാണ് . ആ സഭയുടെ വൈദി കര്ക്കും മേല്പ്പട്ടക്കാര്ക്കും മാത്രമാണ് അവിടെ ആരാധന നടത്തുവാൻ അധികാരമുള്ളത് .

താല്പ്പര്യമുള്ള ഏതൊരു വിശ്വാസിക്കും അപ്രകാരമുള്ള ആരാധനയിൽ സംബന്ധിക്കുവാൻ സാധിക്കും .കോലഞ്ചേരി  പള്ളിയിൽ പ്രാർഥിച്ചാൽ മാത്രമേ തന്റെ ആത്മാവിനു നിത്യശാന്തി ലഭിക്കയുള്ളു എന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്ന
വ്യക്തികള്ക്കു ആ ദേവാലയത്തിന്റെ ഉടമസ്തതയുള്ള സഭയിൽ ചേര്ന് ആരാധിക്കുവാൻ ഒരു തടസ്സവുമില്ല .എന്നാൽ മറ്റൊരു സഭയിൽ അങ്ങമായിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരാള്ക്കു ഈ ദേവാലയത്തിൽ ആരാധന നടക്കുന്ന സമയത്ത് വന്നു ആരാധനയിൽ സംബന്ധിക്കുവാനും സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യമുണ്ട് .

എന്നാൽ മറ്റൊരു സഭയുടെ വകയായ ദേവാലയത്തിൽ  അവിടെ ആരാധന നടത്തുവാൻ അനുവാദമില്ലാത്ത വൈദീകർ ആരാധന നടത്തുന്നതാണ് സാധ്യമാല്ലാത്തത് . ഇതേ സ്ഥിതിയാണ് മറ്റു ദേവാലയങ്ങളിലും ഉള്ളത് .

ഇപ്പോൾ നിഷേധിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത് നിയമപരമായും വസ്തുതാപരമായും  കോലഞ്ചേരി വലിയപള്ളിയിൽ ആരധിക്കുവാനുള്ള  മലങ്കര സഭാ വിശ്വാസികളുടെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യമാണ് 

M G S Narayanan on St Thomas Legacy in India

A recent newspaper  report on a statement by M G S Narayanan stating that the claim of Christians in India about he founding of Christianity in India by St  Thomas ,one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus Christ is a fabricated story, has been received by general public with a great sense of shock.it is understandable that Sangh parivar(of which MGS is considered to be a fellow traveler)makes such statements. MGS is known more as a historian than  as a Sangh parivar camp follower .

  It is true that there are Christian historians (mainly from western Churches )who refuse to accept that the Christian Church in India is found by St Thomas. Some of the Indian historians like Elangulam  Kunjhan Pillai have also found the historical  evidences inadequate for proving the legacy of St Thomas. The western Christians had a bias ,Indian Historians had a point in heir arguments based on certain methods of Historiography they followed . The only inconstancy found in their  deduction is that if the same methods are applied, many of the events prior to 3rd Century AD will also fall into the same category .

However, MGS is basing his arguments in support of denying the St Thomas tradition on he following grounds:

1.There were no Namboothiris in Malabar at that time.
2.The land was occupied mainly by primitives.
3.Gondphorus was a King in Afghanistan not in  Malabar
4.St Thomas had no way to communicate  to he local  population   due  to language barrier

It is very surprising how a great historian of  MGS's caliber can base his arguments on such flimsy grounds

Of course it is believed that there were 4 Brahmin families among those who accepted Christian faith as a result of te evangelization of St Thomas . But they were not the only ones converted to belief in Jesus Christ, nor were the early Christians consisted of only Brahmins. Gospel of St Thomas was universal and all sorts of people joined Christianity. To say that Brahmins did not exist in Malabar prior to the Aryan occupation in the third century will mean that there were no sanathana dharmis or temple worship in Malabar prior to the Aryan occupation. Probably the Brahmins occupied a very dominant and powerful position in the society post the Aryan occupation .But the fact remains that there were sanathana dharmis and temple worship in Malabar prior to 1st Century AD.

The point that the land was occupied by primitives is partially true . It does not men that there were only primitives in Malabar prior to the Aryan occupation. .It is a settled position that foreign trade was flourishing in Malabar many centuries prior to Christ. Foreign trade cannot take place in a land where there are only primitives . For successful trading ,need of persons with knowledge of foreign languages ,navigation,. value of different commodities and.currencies are needed.. While large part of the population might be primitives , there were a decent number of educated people too .

Recently some historical evidnces were found about the existence of a King by name Gondaphorus in Afghanistan ,whose reign was in 1st Century AD .. The book Acta Thoma   written in the 3rd Centaury AD  states that St Thomas came to India to build a Castle for King Gondaphorus .It only strengthens the legend of evangelization in India by St Thomas .In the middle east in ancient times,India was a broad term that represented a large portion of  Asia . Hence Gondaphorus being an Afghan King only strengthens the St Thomas Legend There have been discoveries of a Northern India evangelization by St Thomas .Hence , the Church founded in Malabar is the product of another mission undertaken by St. Thomas

Language barrier is the weakest of arguments put u by MGS. There was a considerable number of Jews in Kodungallur(known as Musiris at that time) .They knew Aramaic and the local language .There were also a good number of persons locally available who could handle many languages due to their trade connections .

I do not think that a scholar like MGS can make such rudimentary errors . Under what circmstances he made such statements baffles me.


 

അൽമായ രത്നം ഇ .ജെ .ജോസഫ്‌ എറികാട്ടു

മലങ്കര സഭയുടെ എക്കാലത്തെയും മികവുറ്റ സമുദായ സെക്രെടറി,സഭക്ക് ഇന്നുവരെ ലഭിച്ച ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച അൽമായ നേതാക്കളിൽ മുൻ നിരയിൽ ഗണി ക്കപ്പെടുവാൻ എന്തുകൊണ്ടും യോഗ്യതയുള്ള ഒരു സഭാ സ്നേഹി എല്ലാമായ ഒരു മഹദ് വ്യക്തിത്ത മാണ്  ശ്രി  ഇ .ജെ .ജോസെഫിന്റെ   വേര്പാടിലൂടെ  മലങ്കര  സഭക്ക് നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടത് .

വട്ടശ്ശേരിൽ തിരുമേനിയുടെ ഭരണകാലത്ത്  അൽമായ ട്രസ്റ്റി ആയിരുന്ന, എറികാട്ടു കുഞ്ചപ്പൻ എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഇ.ജെ.ജോസഫ്‌ (സീനിയർ ) ൻറെ മകനായ  ഇ.ജെ.ജോസഫ്‌ പതിനേഴാം വയസ്സില വട്ടശ്ശേരിൽ തിരുമേനിയുടെ രോഗശയ്യ്ലെ ശുശ്രൂഷ മുതൽ ആരംഭിച്ച സഭാ സേവനം സ്വയം  ശയ്യവലബിയാകുന്നത്   വരെ തുടര്ന്നു .ഒരു നൂറ്റാണ്ടോളം (9 6 വയസ്സുവരെ )നീണ്ടുനിന്ന ജീവിതത്തിൽ ഓരോ ശ്വാസത്തിലും സഭ എന്ന് മാത്രം ചിന്തിക്കയും  പ്രവര്തിക്കയും ചെയ്ത ആ മഹാത്മാവിന്റെ വേര്പാട് സഭക്ക് ഒരു വലിയ നഷ്ടം തന്നെയാണ് .

എന്റെ പിതാവിന്റെ സ്നേഹിതൻ ,കുടുംബപരമായി ഉള്ള ബന്ന്ധു ത്വം ,ഒരേ ഇടവകക്കാരും നാട്ടുകാരും എന്ന അടുപ്പം ,സഹപാഡിയുടെ പിതാവ് എന്ന നിലയിലുള്ള ബഹുമാനം എന്നതിനെക്കളെല്ലാം എന്നെ ആകര്ഷിച്ചതു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ  വ്യക്തി ജീവിതത്തിലുള്ള അനേക ഗുണങ്ങളായിരുന്നു . പ്രാര്ത്ഥന നോമ്പ് ഉപവാസങ്ങളിലെ നിഷ്ടകൾ ആശ്രമസ്തരെ  അതിശയിക്കുന്നതായിരുന്നു . മൃദു ഭാഷിയും വിരൽതുമ്പുകൾ വരെയുള്ള മാന്യത  പുലര്ത്തുന്ന പെരുമാറ്റം ,സത്യസന്ധത ,നിലപാടുകളിലെ ആര്ജവത്വം  ഇവക്കെല്ലാം ഒരു നേർ  സാ ക്ഷി അല്ലായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ ,ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ അങ്ങിനെ ഒരാൾ  ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നു എന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുവാൻ പ്രയാസമായിരുന്നെനെ  .സ്വന്തമായിട്ടുള്ള എന്തിനേക്കാളും സഭയും സഭാ കാര്യങ്ങളും ആണെന്ന് ആത്മാര്തമായി വിശ്വസിച്ചിരുന്ന ഒരു വ്യക്തി ഈ ഇരുപതു-ഇരുപത്തൊന്നു നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളിൽ  ഈ നാട്ടിൽ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നു എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാൽ പലര്ക്കും വിശ്വസിക്കുവാൻ പ്രയാസമായിരിക്കും .എന്നാൽ അദ്ദേഹവുമായി അടുത്തിടപഴകിയ പലരും അതിനു  ദ്ര് ക് സാക്ഷികളായി ഇന്നും ജീവിച്ചിരിപ്പുണ്ട് .

സഭക്ക് വേണ്ടി പ്രവർത്തിക്ക  എന്നാൽ  പുഷ്പശയ്യ അല്ലെന്നും മറിച്  മുള്ളുകളുടെ  ഇടയിലൂടെയുള്ള പ്രയാണ മാണെ ന്നും ഉള്ള  അറിവ് അനുഭവത്തിലൂടെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ചെറുപ്പത്തിൽ തന്നെ ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നു . വട്ടശ്ശേരിൽ  തിരുമേനിയുടെ ഭരണകാലത്ത് സമുദായ ട്രസ്റ്റി  ആയിരുന്ന  ഇ .ജെ  ജോസഫ്‌ (സിനിയർ ) എന്ന എറികാട്ടു എറികാട്ട് കുഞ്ചപ്പന്റെ വീടുൾ പ്പടെയുള്ള സ്വത്തുക്കൾസമുദായ കേസുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടു   സർകാരിൽ നിന്നും പൂട്ടി മുദ്രവച്ചപ്പോൾ  മുതൽ സഭക്കുവേണ്ടി  പ്രവര്ത്തിക്ക എന്നാൽ കഷ്ടനഷ്ടങ്ങൾ സഹിക്കുക എന്നതാണെന്ന  സത്യം അദ്ദേഹം ഉൾക്കൊണ്ടു .1 9 5 1 ൽ സമുദായ സെക്രെടറി പദം  ഏൽക്കുമ്പോൾ  അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് വയസ്സ്  33  .സമുദായ കേസിൽ  കേരള ഹൈക്കോടതിയിൽ നിന്നും ഉണ്ടായ നിരാശാജനകമായ  വിധിയിൽ ഭാഗ്നാശരായ  സഭാ സ്നേഹികളെ ഉത്തേജിപ്പിച്ച നടപടികൾ യുവാവായ  സമുദായ സെക്രെട്ടരറി യുടെ  ധിഷണ വൈഭവവും കര്മകുശലതയും വിളിച്ചോതുന്നതായിരുന്നു . കൽക്കട്ടയിൽ നിന്നും ട്രെയിൻ മാർഗം കൊട്ടാരക്കരയിൽ എത്തിയ ഗീവര്ഗിസ് II ബാവയ്ക്ക് നല്കിയ ചരിത്രപരമായ  വരവേല്പ്പ് സഭാ  മക്കളുടെ ആത്മവീര്യം  വീണ്ടെടുക്കുവാൻ  കുറച്ചൊന്നുമല്ല സഹായകമായത് .തുടര്ന്നുള്ള  സുപ്രിം കോടതിയിലെ കേസ് നടത്തിപ്പ്, സമ്പൂര്ണ ജയത്തിൽ അവസാനിച്ച വിധി ,തുടര്ന്നുണ്ടായ പരസ്പര സ്വീകരണം, ഇവയിലെല്ലാം നേതൃത്വ പരമായ പങ്കു വഹിച്ചതിനാൽ  അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ചരിത്രത്തിൽ ഇടം നേടാനായി  . യോജിപ്പിന് ശേഷമുള്ള  പുത്തൻകാവ്  അസോസിയേഷന്റെ മുഖ്യ  സംഖാ
ഘാ  ടകനയും വിലപ്പെട്ട സേവനം അദ്ദേഹം കാഴ്ച വച്ചു  കാഴ്ച വച്ചു

അന്പത്തെട്ടിലെ സുപ്രീം കോടതി വിധിയെ തുടർന്ന് നടന്ന സഭാ സമാധാനത്തിനുള്ള സുദീർഖമായ കൂടിയാലോചനകളിൽ  അദ്ദേഹം നിര്ണായക പങ്കു വഹിച്ചു . പരസ്പര സ്വീകരണ കല്പനയിൽ 1 9 3 4 ലെ ഭരണഘടനക്ക് വിധേയമായി എന്ന പദപ്രയോഗം ഒഴിവാക്കണമെന്ന് വിഘടിത  വിഭാഗം ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടതിനെ സ്വപക്ഷതുള്ള പലരും അനുകൂലിച്ചെങ്കിലും ബേ ബിച്ചായനും  വട്ടക്കുന്നേൽ ചെറിയാൻ വക്കീലും ഉറച്ചു നിന്നതിനാലാണ്  ആ പദപ്രയോഗം പ. കാതോലിക്ക ബാവയുടെ കൽപ്പനയിൽ ഇടം നേടിയത് എന്ന് പ്രസ്തുത ആലോചനകളിൽ പങ്കെടുത്ത പലരും സാക്ഷ്യം പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട് .

1 9 80 ലെ സമുദായ ട്രസ്റ്റി തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ ബെബിച്ചായനും  പി .സി. അബ്രഹാമും സ്ഥാനര്തികളാ യിരുന്നു . ഒരു വോട്ടെടുപ്പ് ഒഴിവാക്കുവാൻ സഭാ നേതൃത്വത്തിലെ പലരും ഇടപെടുകയും 5 വര്ഷത്തിനു ശേഷം പി. സി. എബ്രഹാം സ്ഥാനം ഒഴിയാമെന്നും അപ്പോൾ ബേബിച്ചായൻ  ആ സ്ഥാനത്തേക്ക് വരണമെന്നും ഉള്ള ധാരണയിൽ ബേബിച്ചായൻ പിന്മാറി. ഒതുതീര്പ്പിനു മുന്കയ്യെടുത്ത തിമോത്തിയോസ് തിരുമേനി(ദിദിമോസ് ബാവ ) അത് പ്രസ്താവിക്കയും ബേബിച്ചായൻ പിന്മാറുകയും ചെയ്തു .എന്നാൽ നടപടിക്രമം അനുസരിച്ച് പിന്മാറുവാനുള്ള സമയം കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നതിനാൽ സാങ്കേതികമായി വോട്ടിംഗ് നടന്നു .ഗണ്യമായ സംഖ്യ വോട്ടുകൾ എന്നിട്ടും ബെബിചായാണ് ലഭിച്ചു . പി.സി എബ്രഹാം വാക്ക് പാലിച്ചില്ല എന്നതും സഭാ നേതൃത്വം അതിനോട് കണ്ണടച്ചു എന്നതും ചരിത്രത്തിലെ ഒരു കാണാപ്പുറം .

എങ്കിലും സഭ എല്പ്പിച്ചതും എല്പ്പിക്കാത്തതും ആയ പല ഉത്തരവാദിത്തങ്ങളും അദ്ദേഹം ഏറ്റെടുക്കുകയും  വിജയകരമായി നടപ്പാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട് 198 0 -8 5 കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ പ.മാത്യൂസ്‌  I ബാവയുടെ നിര്ബന്ധത്തിനു വഴങ്ങി വീണ്ടും സമുദായ സെക്രെടറി സ്ഥാനം ഏറ്റു .കലുഷിതമായ ആ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം നല്കിയ ധീര നേതൃത്വം സഭക്ക് ഒരിക്കലും മറക്കാനാവില്ല  പിന്നിടുണ്ടായ .സമുദായ  സെക്രെടറി പിടിച്ചപ്പോഴും തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ എതിർ സ്ഥാനാർഥി വ്യാപകമായി വോട്ടു പിടുത്തം നടത്തിയപ്പോഴും ബേബിച്ചായൻ ആരെയും കണ്ടു വോട്ട് ചോദിച്ചില്ല .ചരിത്രത്തിൽ ആദ്യമായി ചില മെത്രാന്മാർ എതിര് സ്ഥാനര്തിക്ക് വേണ്ടി വോട്ട് പിടിക്കുവാൻ പരസ്യമായി  രംഗത്തിറങ്ങിയപ്പോഴും  സഭാ സ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ വോട്ട് പിടിച്ചു നെടെണ്ടാതല്ല എന്ന നിലപാടിൽ അദ്ദേഹം ഉറച്ചു നിന്നു .എതിർ  സ്ഥാനാർഥി ജയിച്ചത്‌ ഒരേ ഒരു വോട്ടി നായിരുന്നു എന്നതും ചരിത്രം

ഇന്ന് സഭയുടെ അഭിമാനമായ ദേവലോകം അരമന സ്ഥാപിതമായത് അന്നത്തെ സമുദായ സെക്രെടറിയുടെ ദീർഘവീക്ഷണത്തിന്റെ ഫലമായാണ്‌ എന്ന് ഇന്ന് എത്ര പെര്ക്കറിയാം?മറ്റു പലരും അതിന്റെ പേരില് ഉള്ളതും ഇല്ലാത്തതുമായ അകാശ വാദങ്ങൾ പുറപ്പെടുവിക്കുമ്പോൾ  തന്റെ സേവനങ്ങൾ ദൈവ സന്നിധിയിൽ  മാത്രം അറിഞ്ഞാൽ മതി എന്ന ചിന്തയില ആരുമായും തര്ക്കത്തിന് പോകാതെ അദ്ദേഹം സഭ സേവനത്തിൽ വ്യാപൃതനായി .സ്വന്തം വീട് പണിത കാലത്ത് തന്നെ ജന്മനാട്ടിൽ (കോട്ടയത്ത്‌ താഴത്തങ്ങാടിയിൽ ഒരു ദേവാലയം പണി കഴിപ്പിച്ചു .അന്നത്തെ കാലത്ത്
 (1 9 5 1 ) മൂന്നു ലക്ഷത്തിപതിനേഴായിരം രൂപ ചെലവ് വന്നതിൽ മൂന്ന് ലക്ഷവും അ രണ്ടു സ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ ദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെതായിരുന്നു .ഒരു പവൻ  സ്വർണത്തിന്  അന്ന് 1 2 രൂപ ആയിരുന്നു വില എന്നതും കൂടി കൂട്ടി വായിച്ചാലെ ഈ 3 ലക്ഷത്തിന്റെ മൂല്യം എന്തെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാവുകയുള്ളു വീട് പൂര്തിയായെങ്കിലും പള്ളിയുടെ കൂദാ ഷക്ക് ശേഷമേ വീട് കൂദാശ നടത്തുകയുള്ളൂ എന്നതും ഉറച്ച തീരുമാനം തന്നെ ആയിരുന്നു . സ്വന്തമാക്കിയ രണ്ടു  വസ്തുക്കളിൽ കൂടുതൽ ആകര്ഷകമായ ആറ്റരികിലെ സ്ഥലം പള്ളിക്ക് നല്കിയത് അടുത്ത ബന്ധുക്കളിൽ ചിലർ അനേക കാലം വിമര്ശിച്ച തീരുമാനം ആയിരുന്നു  .സാമ്പത്തിക ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടനുഭാവിച്ചിരുന്ന  മലങ്കരയിലെ അനേകം ഇടവകകല്ക്ക് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കൈത്താങ്ങ്‌ നിർലോപം ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്-വലം കൈ നല്കുന്നത് ഇടംകൈ അറിയാതെ

താഴത്തങ്ങാടി പള്ളി കൂദാശ ചെയ്ത ഗീവര്ഗീസ് II  ബാവ,പള്ളിയുടെ താക്കൊലിനൊപ്പം ഒരു കല്പ്പന കൂടി ബേ ബിചായാനു  നല്കി .കോട്ടയം ചെറിയപള്ളി യിൽ  താഴത്തങ്ങാടി നിവാസികൾ കൊടുക്കുന്ന പസാരം ഇ. ജെ ജോസഫ്‌ എറികാട്ടിനു കൊടുക്കണം എന്നതായിരുന്നു കല്പനയുടെ ഉള്ളടക്കം .(അക്കാലത്തു താഴത്തങ്ങാടി നിവാസികളുടെ ഇടവക ചെറിയ പള്ളി ആയിരുന്നു .)പള്ളിയുടെ താക്കോൽ അതതു കാലത്തെ കൈക്കരന്മാരുടെ കയ്യിലും കല്പന ബാബിചായന്റെ സ്വകാര്യ ശേഖരത്തിലും  ഇരിക്കുന്നു .ഒരു രൂപ പോലും അദ്ദേഹം ചെറിയ പള്ളിയിൽ നിന്നും കൈപ്പറ്റിയിട്ടില്ല .
താഴത്തങ്ങാടി പള്ളിയുടെ നടത്തിപ്പിൽ ഒരു കാലത്തും യാതൊരു ഇടപെടലും അദ്ദേഹത്തിൽ നിന്നും ഉണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല

പേരോ പ്രശസ്തിയോ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചല്ല,ഒരു ഭക്തന്റെ കാണിക്ക എന്നാ നിലയിലാണ് അദ്ദേഹം സഭക്ക് സേവനം നല്കിയത് . സ്വന്തം കാർ സഭയുടെ സേവനത്തിനു ഉപയോഗിക്കുമ്പോൾ മക്കൾക്ക്‌ ജന്മം നല്കേണ്ട വേളയിൽ പോലും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പത്നി ക്ക് ടാക്സി വിളിച്ചു പോകേണ്ടി വന്നത് ഒരു ഉദാഹരണം മാത്രം .

ഇങ്ങിനെയുള്ള സഭാ സ്നേഹികളായ അല്മായ നേതാക്കളെ ഇന്ന് സഭക്ക് സ്വപ്നം കാണുവാനേ സാധിക്കയുള്ളൂ


 

Marriages between persons of differnt Religions -From a Christian point of view

Till recently marriages between persons of 2 different religions were few and far between in the Indian context.  A large majority of  marriages in India were arranged ones , where the key decision makers were parents and other close relatives . The boy and girl got precisely 5 minutes of their meeting in the presence of close relatives to say yes or no to a relationship that  is supposed to last a lifetime . Still the relationships that came into existence in so unsophisticated manner did really last their full term - that is till death parted them. Not that love marriages did not exist then, of course they did , but those were a microscopic minority - maybe single digit percentage . Even among such love marriages , the partners seldom were from different religions .

Inter marriages -that was the term used to describe marriages between persons of two religious faiths-were in existence for quiet a long time , but they were rather rare . The problem got resolved by one of the partners accepting the religion of the other-mostly the bride accepting the groom's religion .Although sanathana dharma (Hindu Religion) do not, envisage conversion from other faiths there are instances of persons born in families following other religions being formally accepted into sanathana dharma by Arya Samaj and similar organizations , mostly as one starts following the rituals , the Hindu society started accepting them as defacto Hindus.

The pace of inter marriages have accelerated in the past couple of decades . A number of lifestyle changes made that phenomenon quite common . Larger number of females going in for higher education and subsequently and consequently taking up employment , the environment of places of work where young persons of either sex work in close proximity, lesser social taboo for male - female inter action , have created an environment conducive to young boys and girls find their life partners based on compatibility- as they perceive  it .Religious considerations hardly matters in such decisions since their order of priorities have a different order than what is conventionally accepted by elders .

Till a few years back, when a marriage between a Christian and Non Christian took place , the non Christian underwent the process of baptism and then a Sacrament of Matrimony too . In certain cases a ceremony as per the non-Christian partners faith also was conducted . By and large these were to satisfy parents of the bride and the groom . So it was just undergoing the rituals without actually having any in depth involvement . Present trend is that either of the partners do not change their religion even for the sake of the ceremony , but conduct a civil marriage and both continue with their respective faiths . In my view this is a more honest act than undergoing religious rigmaroles without actually meaning it.

The important issue here is what should be the manner in which the Church deal with the issue. As per the present Canon , such marriages are null and void and the Christian who gets into such a marriage can be excommunicated from the Church . However , the situation at the early Centuries were not so . There were families where husband and wife followed different faiths . St. Paul had approved such a situation(Ref :1Corinthians7:14  ).But as the Church grew the present Canons took shape . During the time of St Paul since the Church consisted of converts only , there could be instances when only some members of the family became Christians and others remained with their old faith .  But with the growth of the Church and a few generations later , the present system has come into existence . I have not come across any canonical provision which prohibits marital ties with non Christians . But marriage being a sacrament and sacraments cannot be accepted by non Christians , a sacramental fulfillment of a matrimony cannot take place unless both the bride And the groom are Christians.

The issue that has cropped up can be summarized as follows:

1. A boy and girl gets into a relationship that has no option but marriage , one of them is a Christian and the other non Christian
2.Both wants to continue their respective faiths
3.What are the options before the Church and the faithful?

First and easiest option will be to excommunicate the errant bride or groom as the case maybe
Other is to ignore the development
There seems to have no other option available  within the framework of an Orthodox Church .

Catholic and Protestant Churches have found a via media called "blessing of the marriage". Broadly speaking this is a ceremony where the sacrament of Holy Matrimony is  not administered ,but recognizing the marriage postfacto  and pray to  God for blessing the couple.

A stage has come where Orthodox Churches also need to look at some such alternative

Eightieth Birthday of H.H.Zakka I ,Patriarch of Antioch

Zakka I,Patriarch of Antioch completed 80 years of age yesterday.Except for an article in Malayala Manorama by Dr.D.Babu Paul,self proclaimed eyes and ears of Bava in India,none of H.H's sheep in India seems to have cared about the event.It is now becoming more and more clear that the so called JOC is interested only in projecting the Patriarch of Antioch as supreme spiritual head and show great reverence and unflinching loyalty to the prelate,but in reality cares little for the prelate.There is a fairly large number of innocent faithfuls in India who genuinely regards the prelate to be holding the keys of Paradise as the successor of St.Peter .For them facts or rationale matters little , aftaral religion  has many dogmas,and for them this is one such dogma.The leadership of JOC wants to operate on their own terms ,but they are unable to state that stand in  public , if they do that there is hardly anything that separates them from IOC on matters of doctrine , and those of them who holds the Patriarch of Antioch as the custodian of keys to paradise are sure to revolt.So they are playing a game of keeping the Patriarch at arms length at the same time outwardly showing great reverence.This gives them to do what they like and get away with it.Anyone raising questions is called an enemy of the throne of St Peter ,and the rest is easy.

At this juncture,it may not be out of place to analyse the track record of HH to Christianity in general,to the Syrian and Indian Orthodox Churches.There is nothing great to write home about H H's service to Christianity in general.Even Babu Paul does not claim any such thing.President ship of WCC about which Babu Paul is tom tomming is one that comes by rotation among member Churches.And HH is only one of the 7 Presidents of WCC.MOC had two of its representatives as Presidents in the past-Mrs Sara Chacko in 60s and H.G.Paulose Mar Gregorius in 80s.Dr M.M.Thomas and Yuhanon Marthoma Metropolitan from Marthoma Church also had been Presidents of WCC in the past.So the position is not something unique or great recognition for a prelate claiming to be the 134th successor to the throne of St.Peter and custodian of the portals of heaven.Only utility is that the pipers of HH can utilise that to create some excitement among the  innocent faithfuls  who blindly worship anything remotely related to Antioch.

The Syrian Orthodox Church today deserves sympathies prayers,support of all Christians ,considering the plight they are in.They are displaced from their homeland due to the civil war in that country,their following is fast dwindling,the prelate himself is in very pathetic health condition.Nevertheless,the internal strife in that Church sharply divided on racial lines has no respite.A good number of their members who migrated to various parts of Europe and US have the financial resources to support the Church,which they are doing.And that is what keeps the Church going.

However,the stance of the Church is not that of one that needs help,but that of extreme arrogance and superiority complex. The way HH tried to project himself as the chief celebrant in the ordination of Coptic Patriarch showed the prelate in very poor light . The propaganda that the Patriarch of Antioch being successor of St Peter has the right to consecrate the Patriarch of  Coptic Church was a blatant lie.Even before the 4th century,the Coptic Patriarch had a higher position in protocol among the prelates of Roman empire.In today's situation,the Coptic Church has at least 5 times more numerical strength than the SOC of HH Zakka I . It is understandable for the JOC to make such false claims,but for a prelate of HH's level to stoop down to this level has certainly downgraded the image of SOC and its prelate.

Coming to the Indian scenario,HH had made some very positive moves post 1995 for unity of the Indian Orthodox community.But these moves could not bear fruit due to the extreme stances of a section on either side of the divide.It was the case in 1958 also.At that time Yakoob III patriarch over ruled the objections raised by the extremists of the then Bava Kakshi  and went ahead.Unfortunately the present Patriarch became a tool in the hands of the extremists.

In the inter Church relations too,the Syrian Church has yielded so much to the Catholics that all protocols signed between the two Churches are so one sided that SOC has become an undeclared rite  of the Catholic Church.

Considering the above facts,there is poetic justice in the absence of any celebration in JOC for the 80th birthday of the prelate.

Abdication of Pope Benedict XVI

This blog is meant to deal with issues concerning Malankara(Indian)Orthodox Church.But a major development in the largest Christian organisation cannot go un noticed by Christians all over the world,irrespective of whether they are Catholics or not.

Abdication by prelates on grounds of health is a step that should be welcomed.If a prelate feels that he is not in a position to perform his duties due to indifferent health,abdication is a welcome step.However,it is not common in the Catholic Church.System of that mighty organisation is such that the all powerful Curia can manage the day to day administration even if the pope is unable to discharge his duties for a reasonable period of time.At least from what appears on live TV broadcasts,the pope does not appear to be in such serious ill health that warrants a drastic step like abdication.

Then,there is something that is more that what meets the eye.Catholic Church hierarchy is such that it can give out information up to and only up to the extent they choose and only what they choose.The iron curtain is capable of holding secrets they would not like the rest of the world know. Hence anyone trying to analyse smiler issues based on grapevine and educated inferences.

Despite having the reputation of world's best managed organisation,catholic Church is finding that the issues which they have on hand is rather challenging.The hierarchy is sharply divided between those who want to continue with the time tested methods and those who fell the necessity to be alert to the current realities and to respond based on that.While he was Cardinal Ratsingher,the present Pope  was considered to be a hardliner conservative.There is no reason to believe that his views changed once he was elevated as Pope.If anything,it could have only hardened on assuming a post which has infallibility as a perquisite.

The massive revelation of sex scandals by the Clergy in different parts of the world has inflicted a major body blow on the credibility of the Church especially in the western world . Damage control measures only made things wors.While admitting guilt and taking some disciplinary action,lack of sympathy for the victims has shown the church in bad light.The progressive thinking elements in the hirarchy has been furious over the insensivity.But they could do nothing since the decision making bodies are predominently hardliners.

In the western world,the Church already had serious issues to handle.Indiferance of the younger generation to spiritual matters,leave alone the Church,has resulted in closing down of many parish churches.Nunnaries and Monastries have seen dwindling inmates . With hardly any new entrants,these are also getting closed down.This is beig countered by "outsourcing"nuns and priests from third world countries.This also is becoming unviable due to shortage of manpower therin also.Attempts ofCatholic Bishops Council of India to persuade the faithfuls to have more children have only made them a laughing stock.Not that the Bishops were unaware of the stupidity of their call,they were under compulsion from global church

Situation is ripe for another Luther to emerge and a reformation to take place.This is an oppertunity for Orthodox Churches .

A Belivers' Dream that Vanished

Behavioral scientists say that your thoughts guide your actions,repetitive actions determines your character,and that dreams are your hopes dormant in your subconscious mind.I am not a behavioral scientist who can throw more light on the subject.What I deal with here is the failed negotiations between the puthan Cruz society and believers church.A dream project that could have fetched good returns for both,but prematurely aborted

Politics is said to be a force that brings strange bedfellows together.Adversity too can bring together groups who have nothing in common.Jacobite Church (which is actually a society registered under Societies Act with its Headquarters at Puthan Cruz,Ernakulam District in Kerala)is in serious trouble.On the one side,it is loosing court cases one after the other for control of Churches.It is loosing faithfuls in 3 directions-to Orthodox Church,to Malankara Rite Catholic Church,and to sectarian churches.At least 3 Bishops have revolted against their Mafrian Basaliose Thomas I and are rumoured to be negotiating with Cardinal Basalius Clemis to join Malankara rite.It is also rumoured that some more Bishops are interested for joining Malankara rite.It appears that Catholic hierarchy is sceptical about the advantage in absorbing all of them unless they can bring with them a decent number of followers-both priests and laymen.They also have a problem in accepting married priests.At the lifetime of Mar Ivanios ,founder of this rite,they had accepted married priests who joined the rite along with him and some who joined later.But those who became priests after formation of the rite are under oath of celibacy.Now,if a substantial number of married priests for JOC are to become part of Malankara Rite,they are inviting trouble.Already there is a lot of soul searching going on in Catholic Church about the celibacy of priests.Presence of married priests in one of the rites can trigger demands for lifting the vow of celibacy to priests,not only in Malankara rite,but in other rites too.

The shrewd tactician in Mafriana moved for a kind of arrangement with a sectarian church named Believers Church.Although K.P.Yohannan started off as a sectarian Chuch,he got himself ordained as a Bishop by 3 protestant Bishops.He is facing enquiry by different Government agencies on breach of rules in his financial transactions.He does not have the political clout to get these investigations quashed by political power.So an alliance would have been convenient for both the parties.Financial clout of Yohannan in return for the political clout of Mafryan could have been a win-win situation for both.JOC have practically no following in Thiruvalla side where Belivers Church has a decent presence.

However,the laity in JOC rose in revolt against the move.They found nothing in common with believers Church-in terms of tradition,litergy and faith.They could see that the move was not motivated by any spiritual consideration.Rumours were afloat about large sums of money chasnging hands.Quiet a few Bishops and clergy rose in revolt.The patriarch of Antioch also made a decisive move.H.H. issued an Apostolic Dictum asking Mafrian to stop all such moves.With both the Patriarch and the faithfuls against his machivellian designs,the mafrian was forced to call it off.

And there ended a beatiful believer's dream-atleast for the present
